Fan's-eye view of the Reds

Thumbs up: Jose Acevedo and Lance Davis.

The two rushed-to-the-major-leagues starters have shown promise.

Davis has won four straight games to improve to 5-1 with a 5.48 ERA. Davis allowed eight earned runs in 27 1/3 innings his past four games, a 2.63 ERA.

Acevedo has been more inconsistent, but has shown flashes of dominance while recording a 2-3 record and 5.61 ERA.

Acevedo allowed only one earned run in seven inning while beating the Dodgers Tuesday. He's gone at least 5 1/3 innings in six of his past seven outings.

        Thumbs down: Bob Boone.

The stability of an everyday lineup has curtailed the manager's endless tinkering, but he still can make a Reds fan scream at the radio.

The same guy who attempted a delayed double steal with Sean Casey on third (which failed, by the way), continues to pinch run for the big first baseman, taking arguably the team's best bat out of the lineup.

        Going, going ...

The Reds' six-home run barrage Thursday night brought back memories of 1999. On Sept. 4 that year, the Reds hit a club- and National League-record nine home runs against the Phillies. It also was the major-league record for most players hitting a home run in a game at eight (Eddie Taubensee hit two).

        Take that, Bonds

It was neck-and-neck for a while, but the Reds have finally left Barry Bonds in the dust.

The Reds' 107 home runs is now more than double Bonds' 46.

        In a pinch

Outfielder Brady Clark leads all major leaguers in pinch-hitting, based on a minimum of 16 at-bats.

Clark is hitting .417 (10-for-24) with one home run and five RBI.

        Down on the farm

Right-hander Scott Winchester extended his streak of scoreless innings to 21 1/3 Friday night, allowing five hits in six shutout innings for Triple-A Louisville against Norfolk.
