Dunn, Rijo callups not imminent

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Reds general manager Jim Bowden said Wednesday that calling up two of the players fans want to see, Jose Rijo and Adam Dunn, isn't imminent.

Of Rijo, who has been out of baseball for almost six years because of arm problems, Bowden said: “There's no timetable. He's been impressive, but it's been against (Single-A) Midwest League and (Double-A) Southern League hitters.

As for Dunn, Bowden said: “We've been fairly consistent in saying that he'll come up when he can play every day. We're happy with Dmitri Young, Sean Casey and Alex Ochoa. (Dunn) doesn't benefit if he comes up and doesn't play.”

Bowden would like to see Rijo go four innings Saturday when he pitches in Charlotte, N.C., for Triple-A Louisville and then five innings the next time out.

“Then we'll see,” Bowden said. “The positive thing with Jose is he's been pitching for two or three months, most of it in the Dominican Republic, but he hasn't had any pain in the elbow the day after he pitches.”

But Rijo may have a different timetable.

“I'm going to ask the Cincinnati Reds to promote me in time to pitch (July) 22nd, to play in Miami against the Florida Marlins,” Rijo told Hoy, a newspaper in the Dominican Republic, in a story published Wednesday.

The paper reported Rijo plans to discuss his future with Reds officials this weekend.

Dunn, playing for the International League in an all-star game against the Pacific Coast League at Indianapolis Wednesday night, homered twice and was named the game's MVP even though his squad lost 9-5.

Dunn has combined for 30 home runs and 80 RBI at Double-A and Triple-A this year. It probably would take a trade of Young or Ochoa for him to be called up soon.
