Reds Notebook

Braves may have new interest in Reese

Someone said to Barry Larkin that the impending retirements of Baltimore's Cal Ripken Jr. and San Diego's Tony Gwynn mean Larkin is the major-league player with the most tenure with one team.

Reds general manager Jim Bowden would not say if the Reds have been in contact with the Atlanta Braves about a Pokey Reese trade. Braves shortstop Rafael Furcal is out for the season with a dislocated shoulder.

“I'm not going on specifics,” he said. “But, despite our record, a lot of teams are interested in our players.”

NO LIGHTS: The Reds worked out at 7 p.m. Wednesday, but the lights at Cinergy Field were not turned on. The lights normally are on for games that start at 7:05, and several players commented on how dark it was in the batting cage.

GRIFFEY BREAK: This is the first time since his rookie year that Ken Griffey Jr. has been idle during the All-Star break. Will the rest do him good?

“We'll see. ... I've already been out two months,” he said of his time missed because of a torn hamstring.
