Reyes will get head start in Louisville

By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

General manager Jim Bowden said left-hander Dennys Reyes was optioned to Triple-A Louisville instead of going there on an injury rehabilitation assignment because the latter wasn't necessary.

“He told us and (medical director Dr.) Tim Kremchek he was ready to go. When you're sent to rehab, you're sent to rehab an injury,” said Bowden, citing Reyes' recent series of simulated games as an alternative to a rehab assignment.

Said Reyes of his troublesome left forearm: “I don't feel 100 percent, but I feel good. The more I throw, the better I feel, so I think I'll be OK.”

Reyes, who has been relieving since 1999, is being considered as a starter. “As soon as he can beat out one of the starters here, he'll be back,” Bowden said.

The Reds long have considered Reyes, who'll pitch Friday against Ottawa, a potential starter.

“I'm pretty happy,” said Reyes. “I just hope they don't keep me too long down there.”

JULY 31 NEARS: Scouts representing the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles were on the premises Tuesday night.

The Red Sox, who have made two big trades with the Reds since Aug.31 (Dante Bichette and Chris Stynes), need offensive help, which deepens the speculation involving Cincinnati's Dmitri Young. Pittsburgh's John Vander Wal also has been mentioned in similar rumors.

The Orioles' baseball operations are run by Syd Thrift, who helped nurture Bowden when both were with Pittsburgh. Contrary to previous rumors, Baltimore is unlikely to part with right-hander Sidney Ponson but might be willing to trade left-hander John Parrish, 23, who has split the season between the majors and Triple-A.

ROTATION OF RESTS: Manager Bob Boone followed through on his plan to rest his son, third baseman Aaron, which is closely linked to efforts to find playing time for Michael Tucker. So while Young moved to third base, Tucker started in left field.

Bob Boone, who also wants to get more at-bats for Ruben Rivera, will do that by resting center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. today. First baseman Sean Casey, said Boone, probably will get Thursday off.

UP NEXT: Rookie Brian Reith (0-6) will continue his quest for his first major-league victory today when he opposes Pittsburgh left-hander Joe Beimel (3-4) at 1:15 p.m. today.
