Reds minor-league report
Broussard has hit well since return to Double-A
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Ben Broussard, a second-round Reds draft pick in 1999, has been red hot since his promotion to Double-A Chattanooga.
Broussard hit .255 with 14 homers, 51 RBI and 14 stolen bases for the Lookouts last season but struggled after suffering a stress fracture in his right wrist.
Broussard, a 24-year-old left-handed-hitting first baseman, hit .214 in 201 at-bats after returning from the injury. He started this season at Single-A Dayton.
He entered the weekend with a seven-game hitting streak in which he hit .520 (13-for-25) with two home runs and eight RBI.
The streak raised Broussard's average from .299 to .340. He has 11 home runs and 34 RBI in 42 games for the Lookouts.
Overall, Broussard was hitting .300 with 16 home runs and 55 RBI in 72 games.
HOT DRAGON: Dayton Dragons shortstop David Espinosa, the Reds' top pick in the 2000 draft, had three hits against Lansing Friday to extend his hitting streak to seven games. He's hitting .466 (14-for-30) in that span. He has hit safely in 11 of his past 12 games to raise his average to .260.
MATEO UPDATE: Ruben Mateo, the outfielder acquired from the Rangers for Rob Bell, went 2-for-5 Friday and is hitting .247 in 12 games with Triple-A Louisville.
WHERE'S ICKY? The Reds' Gulf Coast Rookie league team has a right-handed pitcher named Gorky Batista, and the Billings team has Noochie Varner. So the Reds system has a Gorky, a Noochie, a Pokey and a Gookie.
