Reds Notebook
Manager takes his cuts
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Reds manager Bob Boone was among those hitting against pitcher Dennys Reyes in his simulated session Friday.
Boone walked and grounded weakly to third.
I got over-aggressive, Boone said. I ain't got it.
Said Reyes: I didn't want to throw inside.
Boone likes to hit or catch pitchers to get an idea of their stuff. He caught Jose Rijo Thursday.
My legs were too sore to catch today, he said.
Brady Clark and acting hitting coach Mike Greenwell were the other hitters who faced Reyes. Greenwell, who toyed with coming back in the spring, hit a home run to left field.
That's the first lefty (to hit one) in I don't how long, Reyes said.
POKEY AT SHORT: Pokey Reese came to the ballpark Friday not knowing if he'd play second or shortstop. With Barry Larkin on the DL, Reese is back at shortstop.
It won't be a big adjustment.
You still have to catch it and throw them out, Reese said. It's good to get a chance to play over there.
TRADE TALK: Boone was talking about trades Thursday when he said: In our situation, everybody is available, but you know nobody can offer you enough for Sean Casey or Aaron Boone.
Bowden wouldn't go that far.
I've never had untouch ables, Bowden said.
SELBY BACK: Bill Selby got the call shortly after Larkin went down in pain Thursday night.
They called in the ninth inning of (Louisville's) game in Ottawa, Selby said. They said get ready.
Selby was at Cinergy and in the starting lineup at second base Friday night. He was with the Reds from May 19 to June 18, hitting .227 with two home runs and six RBI. He got sent out in a numbers squeeze.
Guys like myself and D.T. Cromer, we know we're insurance policies, he said. You go down (to Louisville) and stay sharp.
UP NEXT: Right-hander Jose Acevedo (0-1, 12.38 ERA) starts today at 3:20 p.m. against right-hander Julian Tavarez (6-4, 3.17) in the second game of the series.
The game will be broadcast on Fox. Kenny Albert and Reds analyst Chris Welsh will call the game.
