Teams scalping tickets online

The Associated Press

SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners aren't worried about no-shows in the stands this season. Especially now.

Seattle is offering season-ticket holders a way to sell their extra seats on the team's Web site through a California-based company called LiquidSeats.

Other teams should be following suit soon as Major League Baseball Advanced Media — the interactive media and Internet company for the majors — has partnered with LiquidSeats.

Last year, the San Francisco Giants launched a legal, team-controlled scalping system called the Double Play Ticket Window in which season-ticket holders could give back tickets for up to five games, which the Giants resold on their Web sites to the highest bidders, crediting most of the money back to the season ticket holder.

This season, Major League Baseball relaunched MLB.com, integrating the Web sites of all 30 teams into one center site.

LiquidSeats will offer an exclusive service that gives Mariners season-ticket holders — and eventually season-ticket holders in other cities — the chance to resell their unused tickets to the highest bidders.

LiquidSeats handles the logistics, such as payment, pickup and delivery of the tickets.

“It's easier for a season-ticket holder who isn't able to go to a game on a Tuesday night, because they have a painless way to not eat that ticket,” Mariners spokeswoman Rebecca Hale said. “And it gives a person access to tickets that are not typically available.”

There are no regulations for reselling tickets online in Washington.
