Reyes not ready to return

By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

ST. LOUIS — Dennys Reyes demonstrated in his 25-pitch simulated game Tuesday that he needs more work to get his arm back in pitching shape. So Reyes will either pitch another simulated game or work in the bullpen Friday at Cinergy Field.

Bob Boone described Reyes' results while pitching to Brady Clark, Juan Castro and interim hitting coach Mike Greenwell as “just OK. He didn't have a lot of arm strength.”

But, Boone added: “The big thing is, he was pain-free. That's significant.”

Reyes attributed his underwhelming stuff to feeling “maybe a little bit tight. I didn't do anything (Monday). It was a little weird out there.”

HARNISCH UPDATE: Pitching coach Don Gullett said right-hander Pete Harnisch, who has continued to play catch on flat ground, might be able to resume throwing off a mound by the end of the week if his arm continues to tolerate his current workload.

Harnisch, who has been sidelined by tendinitis in his right elbow, played catch at a 70-foot distance and should graduate to 90 feet in a couple of days.

ETC.: Proving why he won a National League Gold Glove award last year for fielding excellence, Cardinals center fielder Jim Edmonds robbed Jason LaRue of an extra-base hit in the second inning with a running, over-the-shoulder catch on the warning track.

        • Probable starting pitchers for the Chicago series at Cinergy Field are:

Thursday, Elmer Dessens (5-4) vs. Kevin Tapani (8-4)

Friday, Brian Reith (0-5) vs. Jason Bere (4-4)

Saturday, Jose Acevedo (0-1) vs. Julian Tavarez (6-4)

Sunday, Chris Reitsma (4-6) vs. Jon Lieber (9-4).

UP NEXT: Lance Davis (0-0), who looked sharp while allowing two runs in five innings against Colorado in his major-league debut before regressing last Thursday at Houston (2 2/3 innings, five runs), opposes St. Louis' Dustin Hermanson (6-6).
