Reds Notebook

Harnisch needs to 'start over'

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

All the news on the injury front Friday was not good for the Reds. Pete Harnisch is back to square one in his battle back from tendinitis in his right elbow.

“He won't pick up a ball for seven to eight days,” Reds manager Bob Boone said. “Then we'll start over.”

That's what happened on May 11 when Harnisch first went on the disabled list. He rested his arm for eight days, then did some rehabilitation before throwing. But when he tried to throw Wednesday, he had to stop because of pain.

The Reds rotation is Chris Reitsma, Brian Reith, Elmer Dessens and Lance Davis — four starters instead of the usual five. That means the Reds eventually will need to add another starter.

Jim Brower, who has been very good in long relief, is the leading candidate.

“But Jimmy's been so valuable in that role,” Boone said.

Brower in 1-1 with a 0.59 ERA in six games since he was recalled from Triple-A Louisville May 28.

UNHAPPY CLUBHOUSE: It's obvious that some Reds are unhappy with the roster moves lately.

        How unhappy?

“Robbie Bell is the luckiest man in here,” Dmitri Young said Friday.

        Bell was traded earlier Friday.

ATCHLEY FOR REYES: Does the promotion of lefty Justin Atchley mean Dennys Reyes is on the DL for extended period? Atchley, like Reyes, is a lefty reliever.

“The plan for Reyes hasn't changed,” Boone said. “But there's no end day. He'll throw from 110 feet (today). If that goes well — and I think it will — he'll throw off the mound Sunday.”

DAVIS DEBUTS: Lance Davis will make his major-league debut against Colorado Rockies ace Mike Hampton at 7:05 p.m.

Davis, 24, is a rarity. He's a starting pitcher the Reds drafted and developed. The Reds took him in the 16th round of the 1995 draft.

He made the jump to Double-A last year and went 7-5 with a Southern League-best 2.18 ERA at Chattanooga.

This the first year he has been used exclusively as a starter. He was 7-2 with a 3.05 ERA at Louisville.
