Extra lineup cards needed

Reds Notebook

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

ST. LOUIS — Bob Boone used his 45th different lineup in the Reds' 55th game Sunday night. Still, Boone won't match his record in Kansas City.

There, he used 155 lineups in 162 games.

This year's juggling has been necessitated by injuries. The Reds have not yet used their projected starting eight.

OCHOA BACK: Alex Ochoa was in the lineup Sunday after crashing hard into the wall in right field on Saturday.

“I'm a little sore,” he said. “I took a couple Advil.”

Ochoa went down hard on the play and didn't move. Second baseman Juan Castro retrieved the ball and threw out Edgar Renteria trying for an inside-the-park home run.

“I was like, "Uh-oh, I better stay down,” he said.

        He stayed in the game.

HARNISCH TO REHAB?: Boone said he is inclined to send Pete Harnisch out for a rehab start in the minors no matter how well Harnisch's throwing session goes on Tuesday.

Boone said there's a possibility Harnisch would go straight back to the rotation after Tuesday's session.

“I guess maybe he could,” Boone said. “But I think I might send him out anyway to build him up. . . You can't have too many days like (Saturday) and they have to be spread out.”

Saturday, starter Brian Reith only lasted 1 2/3 innings, putting a major burden on the bullpen.

UP NEXT: Right-hander Osvaldo Fernandez (5-4, 6.55 ERA) will start against right-hander Andy Benes (3-4, 6.92) in the final game of the Reds-Cardinals series at 8:05 p.m. today.
