Harnisch may return in a week

Will throw in bullpen again Tuesday

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

ST. LOUIS — Pete Harnisch could be back in the rotation within a week. That's how encouraging his session in the bullpen was Saturday.

Harnisch threw for 12 minutes, about 70 pitches, working up to full speed.

“It was great. Excellent,” he said. “The last time, I didn't have any pain, but I had some tightness. That was gone.”

Reds manager Bob Boone was equally as upbeat.

“It was as good as we could have possibly hoped for,” Boone said. “It got to the point where he was confident enough to work on mechanics, tempo, pitching things.”

The plan is for Harnisch to throw again Tuesday in Milwaukee.

“I think if that's good, we're good to go,” Harnisch said.

        Boone agreed.

“If he gets through that,” Boone said, “he's game-ready.”

Harnisch has been on the disabled list since May 11 with tendinitis in his right elbow. He had a setback two throwing sessions ago.

But Saturday was full-go and pain-free.

“I wasn't holding anything back once I got loose,” he said. “So it was good.”

Harnisch said staying pain-free is key.

“The trick is keeping this from happening again,” he said. “But I'm confident as long as I'm throwing and not hurting.”
