Update on other injured Reds
By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Shortstop Barry Larkin (strained right groin) said he'll return to the field for pregame drills when the Reds open a four-game series Friday in St. Louis.
What I do, I don't know. I might end up cutting the grass, Larkin jokingly said.
Third baseman Aaron Boone (broken hamate bone in right hand) hopes to be activated next Tuesday or Wednesday when the Reds are in Milwaukee.
It's still really weak for hitting, said Boone, who played catch for the second day in a row. But that should get better significantly each day if it keeps going like this.
First baseman Sean Casey (strained lower back) had a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the eighth inning. He missed his second start in a row.
Third baseman Brandon Larson (swollen tonsils, flu-like symptoms) wasn't believed to have tonsillitis.
Reliever Denny Reyes went on the disabled list with tightness in his left forearm and was replaced by right-hander Chris Nichting, an Elder High graduate.
I couldn't release the ball comfortably. I can't help the team that way, said Reyes, who left Tuesday night's game after pitching two-thirds of an inning.
Dr. Tim Kremchek said Reyes will go on an active rest program, featuring strengthening and stretching for seven to 10 days. He'll then begin light throwing.
Placing John Riedling on the 60-day DL had a dual purpose: It opened up a spot on the 40-man roster for Nichting and gave the rookie more time to recover from his strained right shoulder.
Since he's 25 years old, let's give him every possible chance to heal properly, manager Bob Boone said, estimating that Riedling probably will need four to five weeks of recovery before the Reds think about starting him on an injury rehabilitation assignment.
Double-A Chattanooga outfielder Austin Kearns, rated the organization's top prospect before the season began, will be sidelined until the end of July with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb.
Kearns' hand will be in a cast until the end of June. He then should be able to play in a fall league after he finishes the regular season. Kearns was hitting .242 with three homers and 19 RBI for Chattanooga.
Minor-league left-hander John Curtice, acquired from Boston with Chris Reitsma last Aug. 31 in the Dante Bichette trade, underwent shoulder surgery and is out for the season.
