Elder grad fills in for Reyes
Nichting gets first stint with Reds

Here's a measure of how many injuries the Reds have suffered this season: They have seven players wearing numbers in the 50s. Right-hander Chris Nichting, an Elder High grad, joined the Reds on Wednesday and was assigned No. 57, the highest one yet.
The Reds had to shuffle their bullpen again because left-hander Dennys Reyes, bothered by an elbow problem, went on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday.
At age 35 and having played professional baseball since 1988, Nichting wasn't going to get overly emotional about playing for his hometown team.
It's not like you're coming out of your glory days as a youth, he said upon joining the Reds.
But the promotion was still meaningful for Nichting, who has toiled in the minors except for 13 games with Texas in 1995 and seven games with Cleveland at the end of last season.
I had a good year last year and I don't think I've lost too much, said Nichting, who was 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA and 17 saves for Louisville. I don't think I'd play if I didn't have an aspiration to come back. In the back of my mind, I entertained the thought of getting here, but if it doesn't happen, you almost have to expect that as an older person.
Manager Bob Boone didn't have anything specific in mind for Nichting.
The way we're beat up, it could be about any role, he said.
