Oester glad to see Perez back on field
Reds hero was fired by Bowden eight years ago

Tony Perez's return to a visible role as the Florida Marlins' manager was welcomed Tuesday by the Reds who worked for him, even though the Hall of Famer has said prior commitments will prevent him from keeping the job for long.
He needs to be on the field, said third-base coach Ron Oester, who was Perez's first-base coach during his 44-game managerial tenure in 1993. He's the type of guy baseball needs. I wish he did have the time (to manage). It's good to see somebody treating him right.
It's good that they show that much confidence in him, said pitching coach Don Gullett, who ascended to his current position after serving as Perez's bullpen coach. I think he's qualified.
Oester and Gullett cited Perez's ability to relate to players as his chief asset.
Said Oester: He knows how to get on somebody. Sometimes he does it in a hard way; sometimes he does it in a joking way.
I think he knows what ballplayers go through and what it takes to win, Gullett said.
