Shoulder strain puts Riedling on DL

By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

John Riedling's inability to throw on back-to-back days, a must for a reliever, prompted the Reds to place the promising right-hander on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a strained right shoulder.

Riedling joins six teammates (Scott Williamson, Seth Etherton, Pete Harnisch, Ken Griffey Jr., Barry Larkin and Aaron Boone) on the DL, which doesn't include the walking wounded Pokey Reese (right hand) and Dennys Reyes (elbow).

To replace Riedling, right-hander Jim Brower will be recalled from Triple-A Louisville today. On Friday, Brower was demoted to make room for left-hander Hector Mercado.

Riedling said he suffered a similar injury in 1998 while starting for Double-A Chattanooga. “If it's like that, it's good news because I came back stronger,” he said.

Riedling's arm trouble began when he reported a sore elbow after an April 11 loss in Pittsburgh, prompting five days of rest. He pitched regularly afterward, though his shoulder began nagging him. Riedling said he felt it throbbing after Saturday's game, adding, “I could hardly raise my arm” while trying to play light catch Sunday morning.

Riedling had worked on consecutive days only once this month, facing Arizona on May 8-9. He yielded pinch-hitter David Dellucci's tiebreaking three-run homer in the May 9 game.

Not knowing when or whether Riedling could pitch, said Reds manager Bob Boone, “is my biggest concern.”

When healthy, Riedling was 0-1 with a 2.89 ERA and led all NL rookie pitchers with 23 appearances and a .194 opponents' batting average.
