Reds' ups and downs in first 6 weeks
March 26 Center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. hurts left hamstring while rounding third base in an exhibition game against Kansas City. Injury is initially diagnosed as a strain; it was later characterized as a partial tear.
April 2 Reds lose to Atlanta on Opening Day, 10-4. Braves score in each of tphe final five innings to pull away.
April 8 Reds lose at
Milwaukee, 8-4, completing three-game series sweep for the Brewers. Cincinnati's starting pitchers fail to last more than five innings in each game.
April 15 The pendulum has swung the other way. Reds complete three-game sweep at New York and would win their next game on April 17 against Milwaukee for their fifth consecutive victory.
April 18 Winning streak ends with a 7-4 loss to Milwaukee. Opening Day starter Pete Harnisch allows five runs and has his next start pushed back two days due to elbow discomfort.
April 21 Reds commit four errors, two by shortstop Barry Larkin, in a 5-2 loss to New York. Cincinnati is now entrenched in last place in the NL in fielding percentage.
April 28 A 9-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies improves the Reds to 14-9 and ties them for first place in the NL Central. Cincinnati loses the next day, 14-7, ending a five-game winning streak and 5-1 road trip in which the team hit .388.
May 1 - Deion Sanders goes 3-for-3 in his Reds season debut; since then he is 3-for-25.
May 6 San Diego completes a three-game sweep at Cinergy Field, extending the Reds' losing streak to five games all at home.
May 8 Reds endure Randy Johnson's 20 strikeouts to score twice in the 11th inning, but Graves yields three in the bottom of the inning as Arizona prevails.
May 9 A 5-2 loss in series finale at Arizona drops Reds to 16-17, the first time they've been below .500 since April 13.
