Harnisch goes on disabled list
Treatment alone wasn't helping sore right elbow
By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Nothing else worked, so Pete Harnisch decided to try resting his sore right elbow. He'll be on the disabled list while he does so.
The Reds placed Harnisch on the 15-day DL retroactive to Tuesday and recalled D.T. Cromer from Triple-A Louisville.
Jim Brower will start in Harnisch's place Sunday. Brower, 2-0 with a 4.88 ERA, pitched 5 1/3 innings his last time out, allowing one run on two hits.
Harnisch, a 34-year-old right-hander, has been troubled by tendinitis since almost the start of the season. He is 1-3 with a 6.37 ERA in seven starts.
His medical regimen has included stimulation, stretching and ultrasound.
The only thing we haven't tried is doing the treatment without throwing, Harnisch said. I'm not going to touch a ball for seven, eight days and do the treatment. We'll see if that works.
We tried everything else, Reds medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek said. Hopefully, rest will do it.
Harnisch thought the problem was gone in his last start. He went five innings, allowing four runs and seven hits in a 5-4 win Monday at Arizona.
It felt good, he said. Then it was back on one pitch in the fourth inning. It felt like somebody was stabbing me with a knife.
Harnisch pitched the fifth inning, but the pain stayed with him. The decision to put Harnisch on the DL was made after he tried to throw Friday.
It was really bad, he said.
Harnisch went to manager Bob Boone and pitching coach Don Gullett with the plan to not throw for a week or so.
Throwing re-aggravates it, he said.
The Reds put Harnisch on the DL so they could add Cromer. With Harnisch's plan, he would have missed 12 or 13 days anyway.
Harnisch was on the DL from May 5 to June 28 last year, rehabbing his sore shoulder. He went 8-2 with a 3.49 ERA after he came back.
It's nothing like last year, Harnisch said. ... I feel confident it won't be much more than (seven or eight days).
Kremchek agreed: We MRI'd it, and it was normal, except for a little tendinitis. It's not a major issue.
