Reds-Diamondbacks Scouting Report
When: Today through Wednesday, 9:35 p.m.
Where: Bank One Ballpark, Phoenix.
Radio: WLW-AM (700).
TV: Fox Sports Ohio, all games.
Records: Cincinnati 15-15, fourth place Central Division; Arizona 16-15, second place West Division.
Probable starting pitchers:
Today, RHP Pete Harnisch (1-3, 6.53 ERA) vs. LHP Brian Anderson (0-3, 9.00);
Tuesday, RHP Chris Reitsma (2-2, 4.11) vs. LHP Randy Johnson (3-3, 3.66);
Wednesday, RHP Elmer Dessens (2-2, 5.82) vs. RHP Armando Reynoso (1-4, 6.40).
The bats: Luis Gonzalez, the NL's Player of the Month for April, began Sunday ranked among the top 10 in seven offensive categories (homers, RBI, multi-hit games, runs, hits, slugging percentage and extra-base hits). Ex-Red Reggie Sanders (.291, eight homers and 22 RBI entering Sunday) has contributed.
The arms: Cincinnati didn't face Johnson in seven games against the Diamondbacks last year but won't be so lucky this time. The 6-foot-10 lefty is as strong as ever with a .216 opponents' batting average and 72 strikeouts in 51 2/3 innings both league highs. One thing Arizona doesn't have is a genuine closer, since Matt Mantei is hurt. Four different Diamondbacks have earned saves.
The rest: Maybe the Reds can break their slump in Arizona. They're 9-1 at BOB, including 3-1 last year.
