More roster moves in offing
By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Having already recalled six different pitchers and four position players from their Triple-A Louisville affiliate, the Reds appear bound to make more roster moves.
General manager Jim Bowden insisted when they do, they won't be hampered by the peculiar composition of their 40-man roster.
Not yet, Bowden said. A year or two from now, it might. But right now, no. I'll tell you when it does.
Two of the Reds' top draft picks from last year, infielder David Espinosa and catcher Dane Sardinha, are on the 40-man roster, which is reserved for the 25 men on the major-league squad and, usually, top minor leaguers with three to four years of professional experience.
But the Reds couldn't afford conventional signing bonuses for Espinosa and Sardinha last year and had to entice them by placing them on the roster while guaranteeing them annual salaries near or slightly above the $200,000 major-league minimum for the next several years.
Outfielder Wily Mo Pena, who's in his third professional season and is playing with Espinosa at Single-A Dayton, also is on the 40-man roster. Sardinha is with Single-A Mudville.
A player brought to the majors automatically goes on the 40-man roster. When outfielder Deion Sanders' contract was purchased last week, the Reds had to take right-hander Keith Glauber off the roster by outrighting him to Triple-A. An organization often risks losing players through waivers after they're removed from the 40-man roster.
But, insisted Bowden, I've got other guys I can take off (the 40-man) that we don't have a problem taking off.
