Padres-Reds Scouting Report
When: Today, 7:05p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 1:15 p.m.
Where: Cinergy Field.
Radio: WLW-AM (700).
TV: Fox Sports Ohio, today only.
Records: Cincinnati 15-12, second place Central Division; San Diego 12-16, fifth place West Division.
Probable starting pitchers:
Today, RHP Elmer Dessens (2-1, 4.40 ERA) vs. RHP Adam Eaton (3-2, 5.87)
Saturday, RHP Jim Brower (2-0, 5.31) vs. RHP Woody Williams (2-3, 5.45)
Sunday, RHP Osvaldo Fernandez (4-1, 5.23) vs. RHP Brian Tollberg (2-2, 3.90).
The bats: San Diego has 22 home runs, last in the NL. Reds fans can forget about seeing Tony Gwynn, who's on the disabled list (strained right hamstring). But they can see another veteran, Rickey Henderson. Phil Nevin's hitting .330.
The arms: Don't be fooled by relief ace Trevor Hoffman's three saves. He has had just four chances. Eaton, tonight's starter, is regarded as one of the league's top young pitchers. Tollberg pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowed two runs and earned the decision in the Padres' 5-4 victory at Cinergy Field last June 25.
The rest: San Diego won five of its nine games against the Reds last year, but only two of six in Cincinnati.
