Griffeys trying to adopt boy

Ken Griffey Jr. said he and his wife, Melissa, tried but failed to adopt a child last weekend.

Negotiations, the center fielder said, broke down over the birth parents' desire to maintain visiting rights and other unspecified issues. “In our situation, we can't do that,” Griffey said, referring to granting visitation. “They find out who we are, and they'd be at our door every week.”

The Griffeys have two children — son Trey, 7, and daughter Taryn, 5. For them, adoption is not a foreign issue. Griffey said his wife, Melissa, was an adopted child.

“I think this is the third time we've gone through it,” said Griffey, noting that he and his wife began their efforts during the 1999-2000 offseason. “It's not about finding the right child. It's finding the right circumstances for us to adopt.”

One of Griffey's stipulations is he wants a boy. “We have a lot of girl cousins,” he said, “and Trey has nobody to play with.”
