Father, son ejected

DENVER — The ejections of Bob and Aaron Boone in back-to-back innings Saturday during the Reds' 9-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies ordinarily might prompt plenty of like-father, like-son gags. Except neither Boone found the subject very funny.

Bob Boone, the Reds' manager, was tossed by home-plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Boone thought a balk should have been called on Rockies reliever Kane Davis, but Wendelstedt disagreed.

“It was weak! He baited me,” said Boone of his second ejection in seven games. Boone believed he had ended the discussion peacefully. But as Boone was walking away, he heard Wendelstedt yell something after him.

One inning later, Wendelstedt ruled Aaron Boone, Cincinnati's third baseman, had swung at a low, outside pitch for strike three. Boone flung away his bat in disgust, a common reaction for many players. But Wendelstedt told Boone he was guilty of an equipment violation.

“I responded, which got me thrown out,” Boone said. “I did not question the call. I did not say anything to him about the call, did not say I thought it should be appealed, nothing. I was frustrated about my at-bat.”

Asked if the equipment-violation call struck him as odd, Boone said: “Very odd. It's one thing if I'm in an argument with him and I throw my stuff away.”

Though the Boones are the sixth father-son, player-manager combination in major-league history, it was not immediately known if they became the first to get the heave-ho in the same game.

At least one Red found humor in the situation, though. Yelling in a tone of mock indignation and just loud enough for Aaron Boone to hear, second baseman Pokey Reese squealed, “I'm gonna get kicked out because my dad got kicked out!”
