Reds-Rockies Scouting Report
When: 9:05 p.m. today; 3:05 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Where: Coors Field, Denver.
Radio: WLW-AM (700).
TV: Fox Sports Ohio, today only.
Records: Cincinnati 12-9, second place Central Division; Colorado 12-9, first place West Division.
Probable starting pitchers: Today, RHP Chris Reitsma (2-1, 1.03 ERA) vs. RHP Pedro Astacio 3-1, 1.93); Saturday, RHP Elmer Dessens (1-1, 3.97) vs. LHP Ron Villone (0-1, 10.80); Sunday, RHP Jim Brower (2-0, 3.68) vs. LHP Mike Hampton (3-0, 2.97).
The bats: Colorado has plenty of them, as usual. The Rockies lead the NL with a .301 team average. Todd Hollandsworth (.394) and Larry Walker (.364) are ranked sec ond and fifth in batting, respectively. Walker, who entered Thursday tied for the league lead with 11 homers and with a league-high 25 RBI, seems to have regained his 1997 MVP form. Todd Helton, last year's batting champion with a .372 average, is at .247 but has eight homers and 22 RBI.
The arms: Denny Neagle, who helped anchor Cincinnati's starting rotation in 1999-2000, is 2-1 with a 3.21 ERA but isn't scheduled to start in this series. Opponents are hitting .184 against Astacio but .355 against Villone, another former Red. Reliever Gabe White, who completes the ex-Red roundup, is 0-2 with a 5.19 ERA.
The rest: The Reds have thrived at Coors Field, winning seven of their last nine games there.
