Five Questions with Pokey Reese
When Pokey Reese isn't playing second base for the Reds, he's probably still immersing himself in sports to some degree or another. Reese, 27, is a lot like you and me an incorrigible fan. This is a guy who wears football and basketball jerseys to the clubhouse and collects college football helmets in his spare time. He discussed his happy obsession with Reds beat writer Chris Haft a few days ago:
Is there a sport you don't like?
I love them all. Soccer, tennis, fishing, skiing. I grew up loving them all.
If you weren't a baseball player, what sport would you concentrate on?
Football. Since I was 8 years old I was playing both football and baseball. I wasn't really a basketball player; I used to shoot around. My junior year (in high school), I played wide receiver, and I was a quarterback my senior year.
In the offseason, does a day go by when you don't watch a sporting event on TV?
If one does, then I hook up my PlayStation and get my sports games going. Maybe (I don't watch a game) when I'm out on vacation or something. But other than that, it's every day.
What is it about sports that grabs you the competition?
Yes. That's where the best are. It's awesome.
Can you explain your fascination with Philadelphia 76ers guard Allen Iverson?
He's amazing. He's 5-foot-9 or 5-foot-10, 160 pounds, and he goes in against the Shaqs of the world and does well. He has a chance to win the Most Valuable Player award this year. Plus, I like the way he did his braids the first time I saw him.
