Griffey decision may wait till Monday

By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

SARASOTA, Fla. — While Ken Griffey Jr.'s strained left hamstring continued to improve, manager Bob Boone hinted that the decision on the center fielder's playing status for Monday's season opener against Atlanta could wait until that morning.

“I don't think we're going to have a feel until 11 or 12 o'clock come Monday,” Boone said Thursday. “The start of the championship season kind of helps injuries.”

Griffey, who injured himself in an exhibition game Monday, will continue to receive extensive treatment and won't play in the Reds' final exhibition games today and Saturday. The team will have a light workout Sunday at Cinergy Field.

Griffey said he underwent therapy from 8a.m. to 7p.m. Wednesday — “with a two-hour break.” He was working with the team's medical staff Thursday after every other player had gone home.

Asked about his condition, Griffey said, “We'll see in a couple of days.”

Dr. Tim Kremchek, the Reds' team physician, didn't examine Griffey but said, “His motion's better; his swelling's down.”
