Game report: Royals 3, Reds 2

The arms: Elmer Dessens had by far his best outing of the spring in the Reds' 3-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals Monday.

He went six innings. He allowed only three hits. The Royals' run came on Dee Brown's first-inning home run.

Dessens faced only one batter over the minimum after that.

Justin Atchley gave up two runs on Jermaine Dye's home run in the seventh. Atchley, the rookie left-hander, had not allowed a run in his first seven appearances this spring.

The bats: Sean Casey extended his hitting streak to five games with an RBI double in the sixth. Casey is 8-for-16 during the streak.

Ken Griffey Jr. had a pair of doubles. He scored the Reds' first run and drove in the second. Deion Sanders hit a triple.

The rest: Pokey Reese made his great play of the day, diving to his right to snare a line drive off the bat of Joe Randa in the second inning.

Up next: The Reds play the Texas Rangers today at 1:05 p.m. at Ed Smith Stadium. Rob Bell (2-1, 4.60) faces Rick Helling (1-1, 6.00). Alex Rodriguez is scheduled to play.
