Game report: Pirates 9, Reds 5
The arms Though Pittsburgh roughed up Jared Fernandez, Red manager Bob Boone said it was still too early to eliminate the rookie knuckleballer from consideration for a spot in the starting rotation. Left-hander Justin Atchley, making his first appearance since March 11, fired two shutout innings and has not allowed a run in 7 2/3 innings.
The bats After going 0-for-8 as a designated hitter, Dmitri Young played his first game in left field since bruising his right shoulder March 7 and went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Sean Casey lifted his spring average from .294 to .342 and has a team-high 13 hits.
The rest Cincinnati resembled a Little League team in the first inning, when throwing errors by Alex Ochoa and Young helped generate Pittsburgh's first two runs. Young atoned with a sliding catch of Aramis Ramirez's sinking line drive in the fifth inning.
Up next Today against Toronto in Sarasota, 1:05 p.m. Rob Bell will oppose RHP Esteban Loaiza.
