Etherton could miss whole season
By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer
SARASOTA, Fla. Reds right-hander Seth Etherton could miss the entire 2001 season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to remove a bone spur in the back of his shoulder and repair a torn labrum.
Dr. Tim Kremchek, the Reds' team physician who performed the surgery, said Etherton will be sidelined from four to six months. According to that timetable, he wouldn't pitch if he needed the maximum recovery period.
Kremchek said removing the bone spur should relieve the pain Etherton had felt while trying to pitch during spring training.
The rest of his shoulder looks pretty good, Kremchek said.
Kremchek believed that Etherton, who was 5-1 as a rookie with the Anaheim Angels last year before the Reds obtained him in a trade, can regain full effectiveness. Danny Graves, Pete Harnisch, Denny Neagle (now with Colorado) and Scott Winchester are examples of Reds pitchers who rebounded from surgery or extensive rehabilitation.
Etherton won't go on the disabled list officially until the regular season begins. He might go on the 60-day DL instead of the 15-day list to save a roster spot.
