Reds may pursue Ruben Rivera

By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Though the Reds appear to have enough talented outfielders, a baseball source said Monday that they've expressed interest in free agent outfielder Ruben Rivera, who was waived recently by the San Diego Padres.

The Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Devil Rays also are said to be pursuing the 27-year-old Rivera, a reputed five-tool player whose potential has gone unrealized.

The right-handed hitter has a .210 career batting average, 48 homers and 151 RBI in 445 career games.

Last season, Rivera hit .208 with 17 homers and 57 RBI in 423 at-bats. He struck out 137 times while walking 44.

If the Reds succeed in acquiring Rivera, they will concentrate on trying to develop his skills rather than rush him into the lineup. He has 368 strikeouts in 1,115 lifetime at-bats, an average of roughly one per three at- bats.

Interestingly, Rivera has posted his best statistics against Cincinnati. His .322 average (19-for-59) and 15 RBI against the Reds are personal bests, and his five home runs off Cincinnati pitching match his career- high total against San Francisco.
