'New' Cinergy needs new ground rules

Homer height among decisions for baseball officials

By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

FORT MYERS, Fla. — All those nifty changes at Cinergy Field require some official business to be conducted.

A team of major-league officials will visit the stadium Tuesday to examine it and establish a new set of ground rules, Reds chief operating officer John Allen said Saturday.

Allen said he'd be “very surprised” if the officials don't rule that a home run must clear the 30-foot wall in center field. The concept of calling home runs on balls that strike on or above an elevated line, as is the case at several parks, has become unpopular, Allen added.

Allen sounded enthused about Cinergy's freshly installed grass.

“It's just awesome,” he said, noting that recent root-depth tests proved favorable.

Testing also has been conducted on the lights, which became an issue after a substantial portion of the stands were removed from left and left-center field — and, with them, the field lighting atop those sections.

“This year's workout (before Opening Day) will take on a little more significance,” Allen said.
