Williamson role's no lock
Pitcher, Boone differ over last outing
By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. Reds manager Bob Boone has about two weeks to complete his rotation. And in his estimation, Chris Reitsma appears to be on the ascent while Scott Williamson is prompting doubts.
Reitsma and Williamson pitched three innings apiece in Cincinnati's 4-3 exhibition victory Thursday over the Texas Rangers. Williamson started, allowing just one hit Alex Rodriguez's first-inning, two-run homer. That followed a walk to Randy Velarde after Williamson had gone ahead on the count 1-2. Williamson also walked two other hitters.
Williamson, who entered the game with a 5.87 ERA in three appearances, rated his performance his best of the spring. Citing the breeze wafting toward left field, he dismissed Rodriguez's homer as windblown and said, For me, that's three innings, no runs and no hits.
Boone was more reserved, calling Williamson's outing OK. Mentioning the walks Williamson issued and high pitch count, Boone summarized, That's him. He added that Williamson remains alive in the hunt for a starting spot and will pitch at least three more times this spring.
So might Reitsma, whose name prompted instant enthusiasm from Boone. Asked if Reitsma took a step forward against the Rangers, Boone replied, Yes. Absolutely. The rookie right-hander, who has never pitched above Double-A, surrendered a monstrous fifth-inning home run to Bo Porter but no other hits while walking one and striking out three.
Noting that Reitsma was coaxing easy outs from the Rangers, Boone said: That's a big difference. You're not sweating over them, if you're the manager.
