Sheffield rumors false, Bowden says
Deion offers to intercede
By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. General manager Jim Bowden did what he could Monday to stop the Gary Sheffield rumors from continuing to swirl around the Reds.
We are not involved in any Gary Sheffield trade talks at this time, Bowden said.
Some think otherwise, though the Los Angeles Dodgers slugger has dropped his trade demand.
Outfielder Deion Sanders, a friend of Sheffield's, said in published reports that Shef field would be willing to defer half of his $9.5 million annual salary to come to Cincinnati. Sanders also said he would act as an intermediary between the Reds and Sheffield.
Sanders sounded hopeful Monday.
You know how I feel about the situation, he said. I know he (Sheffield) would definitely entertain the opportunity (to join the Reds).
