Morris gets first at-bats today

Reds Notebook

By Gary Schatz
Enquirer contributor

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Hal Morris, who is going to compete with D.T. Cromer for a job as Sean Casey's backup at first base and left-handed pinch hitter, will appear in Haines City, Fla., against the Kansas City Royals today.

Morris will be the designated hitter. “The world is your competition,” Boone said of the in-house rivalry. “You're always a phone call away (from losing your spot). The phone could ring, and you're out of a job. When I was playing, I knew the phone could ring at any time and they could trade for Johnny Bench.”

"EX' FILES: Former Reds left-handers Pete Schourek and Columbus native Kent Mercker are competing for spots in the Boston bullpen. Schourek has allowed one run in two innings for a 4.50 ERA. Mercker has allowed two earned runs in three innings for a 6.00 ERA.

BOONE BIRTHDAY: Aaron Boone is 28 years old today. And for the special occasion, his father and manager, Bob, let him stay behind in Sarasota rather than make the two-hour bus journey to play Boston.

“I got him a "Get out of jail free' card,” Bob joked. “I didn't have time to shop.”

Regular players rarely make the longer road trips in spring training.

ETC: The MRI of Dmitri Young's right shoulder revealed a bruised rotator cuff.

“He'll be fine,” assistant trainer Mark Mann said. “We used ice to reduce the inflammation. He'll play catch tomorrow. He won't hit yet.”

        • Griffey and Larkin finished 4 1/2 innings and flew home to Orlando for the evening. Larkin exited after he hit a double in the fifth — his only hit in three at-bats — then left for a pinch runner. Griffey was hitless in three at-bats.
