Game report: Reds 5, Red Sox 1

The arms — Knuckleball pitcher Osvaldo Fernandez shut down his former teammates on one hit. He walked two and hit two batters but allowed no runs. Hector Mercado and Danny Graves each threw a shutout inning. The lone Boston run was allowed by John Reidling.

The bats — D.T. Cromer, who is battling Hal Morris for a roster spot, had two hits, including a home run off Hideo Nomo — Cromer's first of the spring. Kelly Stinnett hit his first homer this spring, off Nomo for three runs, and also had an RBI single. Deion Sanders extended his hitting streak to four games and is 5-for-12 (.417) in that span. Brandon Larson has hit safely in six of his eight games and is hitting .318 with two home runs.

The rest — With Larkin and Griffey back in action, the Reds are seeing their projected starting lineup on the field. Dmitri Young has a bruised rotator cuff and is not expected to miss much time. The Reds have won seven of their last eight exhibition games.

Up next — The Reds will split the squad and play at home against Tampa Bay and away against Kansas City. Ron Oester will lead the road crew. Pete Harnisch will face the Devil Rays' Ryan Rupe at 1:05 p.m., and Dennys Reyes will challenge the Royals' Blake Stein at 1:05 p.m.
