Injury won't keep Young out long
By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer
SARASOTA, Fla. The Reds are fairly sure Dmitri Young's shoulder isn't seriously injured.
Meanwhile, manager Bob Boone is absolutely certain his left fielder is a fine example to his teammates.
Team physician Dr. Tim Kremchek was expected to examine the results of Young's MRI today. Young sprained his right shoulder during Wednesday night's split-squad exhibition against the Pittsburgh Pirates when he dove for Kevin Young's shallow fly ball and landed hard on the outfield grass.
Even without Kremchek's official evaluation, the Reds felt optimistic that Young wouldn't be sidelined for a long period.
The initial indication is that it's nothing serious, trainer Greg Lynn said Thursday.
I'm fine, just stiff, said Dmitri Young, who kept busy by undergoing treatment and riding a stationary bicycle.
Boone joked about Dmitri Young's lunging fielding attempt: I gave him a pretty low number. The German judge gave him even less.
Turning serious, Boone also praised Young's hustle.
The great thing you've gotta love about Dmitri is that you know that he'll give you everything you ask, Boone said.
He'll give you his shoulder to try to catch a fly ball in spring training. I think he's the epitome of how I view this club. If we have a bunch of Dmitris out there, we're not going to be bad. At least we'll have fun trying.
