Reds wouldn't let Randolph hire coaches

TAMPA, Fla. — Willie Randolph might have taken Jim Bowden's low-ball offer to manage the Reds last winter, but Randolph said he rejected it when the Reds GM said he could not appoint his own coaching staff.

“I don't think, "Wow, I'm missing something,'” Randolph told the New York Times. “I'm not thinking of what could have been.”

Bowden declined comment to The Enquirer.

Randolph, a Yankees coach, said he is proud and losing patience with waiting to become a manager

“It's not like I was offered a contract and I flippantly said I didn't want it,” Randolph told the Times. “That's one of the things that has bothered me about all of this. I had an opportunity, and I know it's not like minorities have people knocking down their doors every day. I'd take a pay cut to manage. I agonized over it. I went down to the last minute before deciding.”

First Ron Oester, then Randolph turned down a $650,000 offer - the lowest salary in the majors. Bob Boone finally took it.
