Reds optimistic about Young's injury
Outfielder hurts shoulder
By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer
SARASOTA, Fla. Reds left fielder Dmitri Young sprained his right shoulder while diving for a bloop hit in Wednesday night's exhibition game against the Pirates but predicted he won't be sidelined for a prolonged period.
The extent of the injury won't be known until Young undergoes an MRI today.
I don't even want to go in that machine and sit there for 45 minutes listening to a bad radio station, Young said, maintaining his sense of humor. Getting in that thing makes you feel like you're in a coffin. I don't think anything bad will come out of this, except I'll have to break an MRI machine.
The play unfolded in the top of the second inning with Pittsburgh's Aramis Ramirez on first base and one out. Kevin Young swung at a 3-2 pitch and lifted a fly to shallow left. Fooled by Kevin Young's big swing and coping with swirling winds, Dmitri Young hesitated before breaking in for the ball. He dove and lost control of the ball as he struck the ground, resulting in an RBI double.
Initially fearing he had injured himself severely, Dmitri Young picked up his glove and flung it to the grass before trainer Greg Lynn led him to the clubhouse.
Once you've had that scare, you kind of get overprotective, Young said, pointing to the scar below his right shoulder resulting from a 1993 injury.
When I dove and landed on my elbow, all the force went right in that shoulder. That was probably the scary part. I felt something, but I didn't feel anything major. But I did feel stiffness and soreness.
