RHP Reitsma aims to impress

By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

SARASOTA, Fla. — Chris Reitsma, one of the leading “sleepers” who has awakened interest in his pitching skills, can take a step toward securing a spot on the pitching staff with a strong effort today.

Reitsma, who hasn't pitched above Double-A, will start the first of two split-squad games against Pittsburgh. Manager Bob Boone said Tuesday he's considering Reitsma for a spot in the starting rotation, though the right-hander also has intrigued the organization as a reliever by excelling in that role during the Arizona Fall League.

“He's one of those guys I've talked about pounding on that door,” Boone said of Reitsma, who pitched 2 2/3 perfect innings against Cleveland on Friday. “He could break it down.”

Reitsma, a starter through his five-year professional career, could strengthen his chances with his ability to pitch in the rotation or the bullpen.

“Again, we'll see,” Boone said of the 23-year-old right-hander, who was acquired Aug.31 from Boston in the Dante Bichette trade. “It's so easy to jump the gun.”
