Righty trio could throw on Sunday

Dessens, Etherton, Estrella worked to get stronger

By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

SARASOTA, Fla. — Right-handers Elmer Dessens, Seth Etherton and Leo Estrella, whose activity has been restricted by weakness in their shoulders and upper backs, could begin throwing as early as Sunday, pending the results of tests they'll undergo the day before.

“They're all ready to pass the test. Mentally, anyway,” Reds manager Bob Boone said Thursday with a chuckle, referring to the trio's impatience to join regular workouts.

Since their conditions were diagnosed during physical examinations Feb.14, Dessens, Etherton and Estrella have played catch on flat ground while maintaining an ambitious regimen of exercises that require as much as five hours to complete.

Their progress has been closely monitored, since Dessens and Etherton are leading candidates for the starting rotation and Estrella, who threw two no-hitters last year, was instantly stamped as a top prospect after being acquired from Toronto in the Steve Parris trade.

Trainer Greg Lynn said Saturday's tests will measure the pitchers' flexibility as well as strength. “But it'll be more strength than flexibility,” he said.
