SARASOTA, Fla. Third baseman Aaron Boone took extra fielding practice and continues to show few ill effects from knee surgery Aug.8.
But manager Bob Boone still plans to hold his son out of exhibition games for at least the first week of Grapefruit League play.
He gets giddy, Bob Boone said. We want to keep him from getting too antsy when these games start. That's the tough part.
Infielder Gookie Dawkins remains on a modified regimen, in trainer Greg Lynn's words, as he recovers from arthroscopic right knee surgery. Lynn said Dawkins, who refrained from jogging with teammates before Thursday's workout, will be re-evaluated in a week to 10 days.
Can slugger Ken Griffey Jr. bunt? He tapped the first delivery he saw from a pitching machine perfectly down an imaginary third-base line ... batting right-handed.
Left-hander John Candelaria, a former California Angels teammate of Bob Boone's, visited camp.
Third baseman Brandon Larson, right-hander Brian Reith and outfielders Brady Clark and Jackson Melian signed one-year contracts, trimming the list of unsigned players to 11.
