Reds Notebook
Players on hand are fit
By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer
SARASOTA, Fla. Reds team physician Dr. Tim Kremchek was upbeat about the overall condition of the players, mostly pitchers and catchers, who underwent physical examinations.
The guys have conditioned themselves pretty well, Kremchek said. (Management was) obviously a lot more selective in who they brought to camp.
Kremchek said third baseman Aaron Boone, who underwent reconstructive surgery on his left knee Aug.8, was ahead of schedule in his recovery but probably won't be rushed into exhibition games before mid-March.
Our goal is to get him enough at-bats and fielding confidence so he's ready to go at the start of the (regular) season, Kremchek said.
Kremchek also singled out Osvaldo Fernandez and reliever Mark Wohlers (elbows) for their diligence in maintaining exercise programs, and he said left-hander Hector Mercado, who underwent arthroscopic right knee surgery Dec.19, was progressing well.
WORKOUTS TODAY: Pitchers and catchers begin workouts today. Position players are not due until midnight Sunday. They'll undergo physicals Monday; the first full-squad workout is Tuesday.
