Readers name the wall

The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Red Monster and the Flood Wall got the most votes after we asked you to name the new 30-foot center field wall in Cinergy Field. But you came up with some great original ideas, too. Here are the ones we liked best, some we liked a little, and some we didn't like at all:

"The Great Wall of Fire." Have fireworks launched from the top of it, angled out towards the river, whenever someone hits a home run. Then we could all have the pleasure of hearing the Old Left-Hander sing "Goodness, gracious, Great Wall of Fire!" instead of "Bye-bye baseball!" - Kevin, Pierce Township

Look at the changes

  • New Cinergy Field has views, grass, character
  • Photo gallery
  • Readers like tall wall

"The Venus Flytrap." It's going to eat flies, and it also has ties to the TV show WKRP in Cincinnati." - Darrel Lethgo, Knoxville, Tenn.

"Wrights' Wall" in respect of George and Harry Wright, who mean so much to the history and fine tradition of the first professional baseball team. There would probably be no baseball in Cincinnati if not for the Wright Brothers and certainly Cincinnati would not have the recognition for being the site of the first professional baseball team. - Dr. Mitch Gerber, Cape Girardeau, MO

"Nuxwall." You could paint a picture of Joe's face on it. - Lisa Willison, Zanesville, Ohio

"Tater Eater" - Tony Pugh, Cincy native and lifelong Reds fan living in Washington D.C.

"The Big Dog." I can hear Marty saying it now, "and Griffey goes back, back, way back, it's off The Big Dog." - J.B. Suchanek, Fort Thomas, KY

Since this would be the 25th anniversary of the 1976 World Series Championship. I would recommend a symmetrical fence starting in left with a 5-foot level (Bench) rising to 8 (Morgan) to 13 (Concepcion) to 14 (Rose) to 15 (Foster) to 20 (Geronimo) in left center to 24 (Perez) to 30 (Griffey Sr.) in center, back to 24 to 20 to 15 to 14 to 13 to 8 to 5 in right. Call it the Big Red Monster and paint it red. - Chris Pettit, Millersport, Ohio

"Junior's Wall." Imagine the whole outfield wall is a bar chart of each player's salary; the 30-foot section relates to Junior's salary compared to the rest of the team. - S. Strunk, Warrenton, NC

"The Bud Selig Wall." Hopefully a lot of baseballs will hit it. - Dan Rutledge, New Sharon, Iowa

In keeping with the River and Tax theme: "The Levy" - Brad Clark

The Gas Prices Wall. Just like Cinergy's rising prices. - Jenney Hoeffler

"Red's Rover" - dare you to hit it over! Rover is a tenth player, so Red's rover, red's rover, we dare you to hit it over! - Anonymous

"Edifice Red" - Bob Fitzpatrick, Cincinnati native

The name of the wall should have something to do with Reds' history and have a feature unique to any other ballpark. Therefore, the wall should be painted red and named the "Big Red Wall," in a somewhat corny take off the Big Red Machine of the 1970s. - Chris Koewler, Clarksville, TN

"The Wall of Fame." Paint it dark green with white jersey numbers of Reds in the Hall of Fame: 5 (Bench), 24 (Perez), 8 (Morgan), etc. Also include those who should be in the "Hall": 14 (Rose), 13 (Concepcion), etc. - Jim Powell, Lexington, KY

"The Red Planet." Because anything hit over it would have to have landed on Mars!!! - Phil Degregory, Youngstown, Ohio

I'm currently living in Armenia, but I'm originally from Covington. The "Flood Wall" brings up just as many childhood memories as the Reds and Riverfront Stadium (the former name of Cinergy Field). - Eric Boyle

"The Great Blockade" - Cynthia Forlines

"The Big Red Wall Higher Than Ticket Prices" - Anonymous

Definitely "The Red Monster." And pleeeeaaase, let's all hope for no ads on the wall. It makes the whole thing look so minor league. - William Jamieson

"The Muscle." Something original that says what it will take to hit a baseball over. I can hear it now, "Man, you should have seen the shot Junior hit over the Muscle.!" - Mark W Neumeister, Indianapolis

"The Red Death." Because home runs will die from the plague this wall brings. - Gregory Blosser, Endicott, NY

"Goliath" - Pete Hentrich, Los Angeles

"The Great Barrier Red." Just make sure the wall is red and not littered with advertisements. - John Wagner, Howey-in-the-Hills, FL (but with my eyes closed, still sitting in Riverfront Stadium).

The Big Klu - John Geswein, Ohio

"Wall-y Post" - Ron Strong, Kettering, Oh.

"Lee's Wall" because Lee Walls was a Red for the first half of 1960. Or "The Great Divide" because it will separate the great power hitters from the rest. - D.C. Duffy

"The Fire Wall." Paint some flames on that bad boy and tie in a "Reds Hot" theme. - J. Bunn

"Great Wall of Cincy" - Sisters of Notre Dame

"The Wailing Wall." I'm sure the two resident crybabies - Larkin and Junior - are already whining. - Tom Carter

"C Wall" (sounds like see-wall). Ties into C for Cincinnati, C for Cinergy Field, C for construction going on behind it, C the shape of Cinergy with the back torn down. - Jay Parker, Calgary, Alberta

I like "Griffey's Gate" since Junior will be the one patrolling the area around it and will take his shots at hitting balls over it. - Scott Walter, South Point, Oh

Paint it a deep red and call it the "Red Menace." Keep it all in play. No yellow lines, please! - Chris Holmes, Bellevue, KY

"Olive Creature" is good if, after a Reds homer to any field, we have a ferocious red sea creature rise up behind the wall, spouting fire. Maybe he sports a reds cap. We could even call it the Loch Green Monster. - Jerry Thomas

"Hall of Fame Wall." The jerseys are in every other stadium. Something kind of like what the Dodgers do to their walls. - Angela Perry, Crum, WV

"The Flood Gate" - Matthew Swavel

"The Green Giant: - Owens Family

"Center Stage" - Nate Decker, Cincinnati

"Cincinnatius Colossus" - Andrew Knoll, Eaton, Ohio

"The Big Red Mountain" - Rob McClintock, Georgetown, Ky

"Where homers go to die" - Kenneth Poindexter

"Pete Should Be In The Hall Wall" - Ken Bates

"The Green Robber" - Mike Brigano, Utica, NY

"The Temporary Terror" - Alison Sypkens

"Fort Washington" - Dave Breda, College Hill

"Double Dipper" - Gotta throw in a UDF plug. - Todd Osborne, West Chester

"The Green Banana" - Dan Weinrib, Birmingham, AL.

"The Dam." It will definitely slow up run production. - Steve Schneider, Delhi Township

The Mighty Wallop - Steve Flaum

The Red(s) Green Wall - like the name of the Public TV character - Kelley Hood, Adel, IA

"The Wall-a-bie" (need a kangaroo hop for a ground rule double) - Jim Ryan, Chicago
