Infield outlook

The probable starting lineup is set, but the issues are far from settled.

Third baseman Aaron Boone must prove he has recovered sufficiently from his surgically repaired left knee. Taking a cautious approach, manager Bob Boone has said his son might not participate in exhibition games until mid-March.

Shortstop Barry Larkin (left knee) also has health concerns, though the 15-year veteran sounded upbeat about his rehabilitation efforts this offseason.

Second baseman Pokey Reese, who owns a career .314 on-base percentage and is coming off a season in which his batting average dropped 30 points, would like to develop offensive skills to match his two Gold Gloves.

After beginning last season on the disabled list with a broken right thumb and hitting .213 through May, first baseman Sean Casey wants to sustain the momentum he built in September (.378, 10 homers, 32 RBI).

Competition for reserve roles promises to be fierce. Juan Castro, Wilton Guerrero and Donnie Sadler would appear to have utility jobs, but Chris Sexton will challenge them. Brandon Larson, the first-round draft choice in 1997, could receive an extended look if Boone's health falters.
