Catching outlook

Jason LaRue's time seems to have arrived. The projected No.1 catcher has guided pitchers nicely during his limited opportunities in the last two seasons. Cincinnati's ERA was 3.81 ERA with him behind the plate in 1999 (compared to 3.98 overall) and 3.78 last year (4.33 overall).

Though LaRue has hit only .223 in 67 major-league games, his averages of .315 in Single A in 1997 and .365 in Double A the following year indicate his offensive potential.

But what the Reds really want from their catchers is improved defense, given the team's 12 passed balls and major-league-record 96 wild pitches last season. The Reds figure they can get that not only from LaRue, but also from Kelly Stinnett and Matt Walbeck, who combined to commit just one passed ball in 2000.

Stinnett, a seven-year veteran who signed as a free agent, and Walbeck, who has spent all or part of eight seasons in the majors, could intensify the competition for playing time.

As a former catcher, manager Bob Boone can be expected to take an active role in the instruction and development of this group — particularly with LaRue, who has the least experience.
