Reds ticket sales delayed

Not available til mid-February

Redsfest attendees today and Saturday at the Albert B. Sabin Cincinnati Convention Center should not go looking to buy Reds tickets for games this season. Tickets are not going on sale until mid-February.

Why? The reason is two-fold. One, the Reds have a new ticket vendor — tickets.com. Two, some season-ticket holders are still being relocated to different seats. Cinergy Field has been downsized by 14,000 seats this season to make room for the building of Great American Ball Park next door.

The new ballpark is scheduled to open in 2003.

One advantage to a later ticket sale is that the Reds will have most of their season-ticket purchasers in place by mid-February. That means the Reds won't have to hold back good seats from single-game purchasers while waiting for season-ticket buyers to get on board.

“In the past, when we've put tickets on sale, some people have waited for hours and then get to the front of the line and are told there are no blue seats available,” Reds chief operating officer John Allen said. “The reason is a lot of those (blue seats) were held back for season-ticket sales. Doing it later will give us a chance to see how it works.”

Tickets.com also has the exclusive contract with Major League Baseball to sell major-league game tickets on the Internet, Allen said.
