Reds give Deion another try

Sanders signs with Triple-A team

By John Fay
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Deion Sanders signed with the Louisville RiverBats, the Reds' Triple-A affiliate, Wednesday. Sanders will report to Reds minor-league camp in Sarasota, Fla., on March 4.

“He has a chance to make the Triple-A team; if he doesn't, he'll go home,” Reds general manager Jim Bowden said.

Sanders, the All-Pro cornerback with the NFL's Washington Redskins, signed a non-guaranteed minor-league contract. Sanders, who last played in the major leagues in 1997, attempted to make the Reds last year and played 25 games with the RiverBats before leaving the team in May because of injuries.

“He was never fully healthy,” Bowden said. “So he went home to get ready for football. He wants to try another comeback in baseball.”

The Reds did not offer Sanders a spot in the major-league camp.

“We don't have depth in the outfield at Triple-A,” Bowden said. “So he can help us there.”

KEARNS AWARD: Austin Kearns was named the Reds Minor League Player of the Year. The award was presented by player development director Tim Naehring at the LaSalle High School Stag.

Kearns, the Reds' No.1 pick in 1998, hit .306 with 27 homers and 104 RBI at Single-A Dayton last year.
