Reds invite Henson, Kearns to spring training

Matt Walbeck, Drew Henson and Austin Kearns are the most intriguing names on the list of 16 non-roster players the Reds have invited to spring training.
Walbeck, 31, becomes a candidate for the vacant backup catcher's spot. The switch-hitter batted .199 with six homers and 12 RBI in 47 games with Anaheim this season.
Henson, the University of Michigan's quarterback, is a leading prospect at third base. Henson is said to be weighing his NFL options against a possible future in baseball.
Kearns, Cincinnati's No.1 draft choice in 1998, dominated the Midwest League with Single-A Dayton this season. by hitting .306 with 27 homers and 104 RBI. He is expected to begin the next season with Double-A Chattanooga.
The non-roster list also includes three former Greater Cincinnati prep standouts: OF-INF Chris Sexton (St. Xavier), RHP Chris Nichting (Elder) and RHP Larry Luebbers (St. Henry).
Other invitees are right-hander Dustin Moseley, the club's second selection in this year's draft; pitchers Jared Fernandez, Arnie Gooch, Mike Grace and Matt Skrmetta; catchers Tommy Davis, Tim Spehr and Victor Valencia; infielder Bill Selby, and outfielder Raul Gonzalez.
MERCADO SURGERY: Reds left-hander Hector Mercado is expected to be ready for spring training after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Tuesday to repair torn cartilage.
