Larkin hurts shoulder in workout
By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Reds shortstop Barry Larkin sprained his right shoulder during a recent workout, but is expected to be at full strength for spring training.
Larkin underwent a MRI Monday in Cincinnati, which revealed that he'll just need some time, rehabilitation and exercise to recover, Reds team physician Dr. Tim Kremchek said.
Kremchek added that an MRI performed on Larkin's neck, given the 15-year veteran's injury history in that area, showed no damage. Kremchek also checked Larkin's surgically repaired left knee and pronounced it close to 100 percent.
Left-hander Hector Mercado will undergo arthroscopic surgery today on his right knee to repair torn cartilage. Mercado, who spent most of the year with Triple-A Louisville, hurt himself while playing in the Puerto Rican Winter League.
Reds general manager Jim Bowden said left-hander Jeff Wallace will be the only player not tendered a 2001 contract by Wednesday's deadline. Wallace was designated for assignment last Friday to clear room on the 40-man roster for reliever Mark Wohlers.
