Villone could return to Reds

By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Left-hander Ron Villone could return to the Reds, at least temporarily, if his new team, Colorado, keeps spending.

The Rockies, who signed former Cincinnati left-hander Denny Neagle to a five-year, $51.5 million contract Monday, also have made lucrative offers to right-hander Darren Dreifort, left-hander Mike Hampton and Rodriguez.

According to a provision in the Villone deal, the Rockies would send him back to Cincinnati if their payroll exceeded a certain ceiling, believed to be around $70 million.

Villone, whose $1.6 million salary could approach $3 million in arbitration, went to Colorado for two minor-league pitchers to be named Nov.8.
