Blue Jays want Williamson

By Chris Haft
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Add Toronto to the list of teams coveting right-hander Scott Williamson, who has been featured in trade speculation since he won the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1999.

Exactly who the Blue Jays might offer the Reds in return for Williamson is unclear. Toronto isn't overly thrilled with outfielder Jose Cruz Jr., who might interest the Reds if they don't swap Williamson to Oakland for Ben Grieve. Then again, given the players Reds' upper management has forced general manager Jim Bowden to acquire in exchange for Chris Stynes, Ron Villone and Taubensee, Toronto might not have to give up much.

The Blue Jays would welcome Williamson into their starting rotation. They compete in the American League East, baseball's only division where every team tries to win instead of save money.

Though the Reds are said to be seeking left-handed hitting help, outfielder Michael Tucker has joined Williamson and right-handers Steve Parris and Scott Sullivan as a prime candidate to be traded.

Tucker's signed for next year at $1.8 million, which almost every team would consider a bargain. Reds officials don't think highly of seven-figure contracts. That, along with Tucker's tantalizing skills, make him highly marketable.

Ideal future homes for Tucker include Colorado, which might lose free agent Jeffrey Hammonds, or San Francisco, which won't re-sign Ellis Burks. Colorado is the most likely.

While Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd has displayed his willingness to deal with the Reds, Giants GM Brian Sabean would rather make Jeff Kent a pitcher than dial the 513 area code.
